6 Ways to Lower AC Costs

Lowering your air conditioning (AC) costs can lead to significant savings on your energy bills while still keeping your home comfortable. Here are six effective strategies:

1. Use Programmable Thermostats: Installing a programmable or smart thermostat allows you to set specific temperatures for different times of day. You can program it to raise the temperature when you're away and lower it before you return, reducing the overall runtime of your AC unit.

2. Keep Filters Clean: Regularly check and replace or clean your AC filters as needed. Dirty filters restrict airflow and force your system to work harder, leading to increased energy consumption. Aim to check filters every month and clean or replace them at least every three months.

3. Seal and Insulate Ductwork: Leaky ducts can let cool air escape before it reaches your living spaces, wasting energy. Ensure that all duct connections are sealed with duct tape or mastic and consider insulating ducts that run through unconditioned spaces like attics or crawl spaces.

4. Enhance Home Insulation: Proper insulation keeps cool air inside during hot weather and reduces the workload on your AC unit. Focus on insulating attics, walls, and floors. Additionally, use weather stripping around doors and windows to seal any leaks.

5. Utilize Ceiling Fans: Ceiling fans help circulate cool air, allowing you to set your thermostat a few degrees higher while maintaining comfort. Ensure your fans are set to spin counterclockwise in the summer to create a cooling breeze.

6. Schedule Regular Maintenance: Routine maintenance of your AC system, such as checking refrigerant levels, cleaning coils, and inspecting for leaks, can enhance efficiency and prolong the life of the unit. Consider scheduling a professional tune-up at least once a year.
