Watch Out for Card Skimmers

Card skimming is a method used by thieves to capture your credit or debit card information without your knowledge. It typically involves a small device called a skimmer, which is attached to or inside card readers at ATMs, gas stations, and point-of-sale terminals. Here are some important tips to help you watch out for card skimmers:

  1. Inspect Card Readers:
    1. Before using an ATM or card reader, visually inspect the machine. Look for any unusual attachments or anything that seems out of place.
    2. Check for loose parts or any signs of tampering.
  2. Use Secure Locations:
    1. Choose ATMs located in well-lit, secure areas, preferably those affiliated with banks or reputable establishments.
    2. Avoid using machines in isolated or low-traffic areas.
  3. Cover Your PIN: Always cover the keypad with your hand while entering your PIN to prevent hidden cameras from capturing it.
  4. Be Cautious with Gas Pumps:
    1. If possible, pay inside the store rather than at the pump.
    2. Inspect the card reader at the pump for any signs of tampering before inserting your card.
  5. Use Contactless Payments: Where available, consider using contactless payment methods (like Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a contactless card) to reduce the risk of skimming.
  6. Monitor Your Accounts:
    1. Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
    2. Report suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
  7. Set Up Alerts: Enable transaction alerts through your bank or credit card provider to receive notifications for every transaction made with your card.
  8. Use RFID-Blocking Wallets: Consider using an RFID-blocking wallet or sleeve to protect your cards from electronic skimming.
  9. Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about new skimming techniques and scams in your area.
